Introduction

Dark Souls is a 2011 action-RPG developed by japanese video game developer From Software, and published internationally by Namco Bandai. It is the spiritual successor to the award-winning 2009 game Demon Souls, following a similar gameplay formula and mechanics. The player assumes the role of a cursed human, known as the Chosen Undead, and is given the task of making a pilgrimage throughout the kingdom of Lordran in order to decide the fate of the undead, and in turn, the rest of the world.

Dark Souls, like its predecessor, became notorious upon release for its high difficulty and learning curve, with the game providing very little hand-holding, and telling its minimalistic story through one-way character dialogue (the player character is mute) and tool-tips/descriptions found on items such as weapons and armor. This forces the player to find his/her own way throughout the world, facing dangerous monsters and treacherous environments on their journey.

The harsh and brutal experience the game offers has divided fans, with some praising it as one of the most imaginative and expansive games in a long time, providing a challenge rarely seen nowadays. Others have criticized the same aspects as off-putting for beginners, aswell as the lack of a coherent and accessible narrative, as one has to dig deep into the game's lore and mythology in order to understand the universe of Dark Souls.

Dark Soulswas released for Xbox 360 and PS3 on September 22 in Japan, with North American and European releases following on October 6 and 30 respectively. The game was ported to PC August 24 2012 under the name "Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition",quoting the tagline of the game which refers to the abundance of deaths the player most likely will experience. This edition contains previously unreleased content, which sees the player traveling back in time and facing off against the legendary knight Sir Artorias, one of the "Four Knights of Gwyn", an elite group of warriors in service of Lord Gwyn, the ruler of the old gods of Lordran. This content was later released on October 23 2012 under the name"Artorias of the Abyss".
