Pohjois-Amerikan Nintendon iso pamppu Reggie Fils-Aimé on kertonut Geek Wire Summitissa, että Wii U ja sen epäonnistuminen taloudellisesti raivasivat omalla tavallaan tien Switchin menestykselle. Lausunnon mukaan Nintendo sai signaalin kuluttajilta, että pelaaminen sekä kannettavassa muodossa että isolla ruudulla olisi siisti homma.
"We had launched the Wii U, following on the heels of the Wii, which had sold 100 million units globally. The Wii U did not have that same level of success. But what we heard from consumers is that the proposition of a tablet (...) coupled with the ability to play games on the big screen TV, was really compelling."</strong>
Fils-Aimé sanookin, että ilman Wii U:ta ei olisi myöskään Switchiä.
