Mielipiteet ovat jakautuneet, mutta vastaanotto ei ole ollut yhtä kylmäävää kuin edellisessä The Last Jedi -elokuvassa. Yksi syy kriittiseen palautteeseen oli se, millä tavalla Luke Skywalker elokuvassa esitettiin.
Nyt verkkoon on päätynyt mittava analyysi Luke Skywalkerin osuudesta kaikissa julkaistuissa Star Wars -elokuvissa. Sen mukaan The Last Jedin ohjaaja Rian Johnson ei kunnioittanut aiempia elokuvia ja niiden laskemaa perustusta.
"--- undermines the central conflict of the original trilogy AND the prequels, and attempts to overwrite six films-worth of arcs of the main franchise characters (Anakin and Luke)."
Ohjaaja Rian Johnson valitsi kommentoida esitettyjä väitteitä, ja IGN tietää kertoa Johnsonin olevan odotetusti tyystin eri mieltä.
"Gil, I understand that point of view but I completely disagree with it. In fact I think it disrespects the character of Luke by treating him not as a true mythic hero overcoming recurring wounds & flaws, but as a video game character who has achieved a binary, permanent power-up."
